The use of language as a tool of power was viscerally palpable to Cold War-era homosexuals, for whom this identificatory label was not merely descriptive, but a scarlet letter used to police and persecute them. Certain terms, such as heterosexual, became coterminous with normalcy and others, such as homosexual, coterminous with deviance. Revealing the dynamics of the process by which these ideological mystifications took place was a central problematic for these artists. In making clear that words mean differently in different contexts, they sought ways to demonstrate that all such labels – and the qualities they name – are mythologized as natural and enduring, rather than being recognized as the shifting and arbitrary product of social construction. As Slavoj Žižek explains, “one of the fundamental stratagems of ideology is the reference to some self-evidence – ‘Look, you can see for yourself how things are!’ ‘Let the facts speak for themselves’ is perhaps the arch-statement of ideology – the point being, precisely, that facts never ‘speak for themselves’ but are always made to speak by a network of discursive devices.”

The text is:
Robert (Bob) Reyes is a former employee of the John and Mable Ringling Musuem of Art/Florida State University.
While on duty at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts at The Ringling, Mr. Reyes often proudly told the story of a dead female body he once found while working for the Sarasota Florida Police. He was able to determine her name and she was a known prostitute. He transported her remains in his police car and found that some of it had stained his rear carpet. Instead of cleaning it, he left it alone so it would smell very bad. This way no other officer would want to ride in his vehicle. He enjoyed riding alone. He said he got used to the smell and each morning he would get in his police car and say out loud hello to her by name. When his shift was over, he would tell her out loud goodnight by name when he left his car. He said that his commander finally had to order him to clean out his car after hearing so many reports of this strange behavior and complaints of the disgusting smell of Mr. Reye's vehicle.

Often times truth proves to be stranger then fiction. Both Ray Johnson and Robert (Bob) Reyes are deceased.

You think you have bad neighbors? Here is our story....

What would you do if you lived in a multi dwelling building and the woman next door had a social gathering and people were having loud sex on your shared patio, about 10' from your dining room and you were trying prepare your meal and eat? Someone opened their patio door and said "Hey, you need to be quiet, we can hear you inside". No shit Sherlock and so could we! What if we had dinner guests over? This is not what we call a night out for a dinner and a show.

Let me say, the female was definitely having a good time, umm, ummm, uh, auh, um, um, um and the smacking of skin to skin contact; or maybe one of them was spanking the other? Now I don't know if they denied the act when they were contacted by the popo, but we have proof if they did deny it. Sick and tired of jerk offs denying things, now we make sure we have proof.

Popo were immediately called and today I was informed the woman was advised. Advised? Really? That's it? Her little cretins were visiting her for the weekend at the time! WTH! It was early enough that they were awake and could have walked outside and gotten an eye full since they are never supervised anyway. I was asked if I would be willing to press charges and said "Yes", but they are just advised? I wonder if this happened on the Popo Chiefs patio if they would have just been advised.

We are not prudes, but there is a time and a place for loud ambitious sex and our shared patio is NOT the place. Just totally disgusting people with no respect for others.
